Letter from the Editor

There are 206 bones in the human body, 206 opportunities for failure, 206 opportunities for loss. But the most damaging injuries are the ones that happen in our minds, the ones that can't be mended by casts or dulled by anesthetics. Our bones mend, our bruises disappear, our body learns to cope with its losses, but the mind's injuries are steadfast.

A psychology teacher once told me that mankind's understanding of the mind parallels that of medicine when doctors were still bleeding people to cure them from illnesses.

So, the, how does our mind learn to cope?

Ancient cultures told stories as a way of explaining the world around them, a world that provided them with comfort and protection one moment and devastation the next. In a way, we still tell stories in hopes that they'll somehow explain the unpredictability of life, the exposed fragility of our minds.

Consider these eight stories small lessons in how to heal from life-altering revelations, crippling injuries, broken families, personal battles and self-discovery.

As editors, designers, photographers, illustrators and writers, the Tusk staff has worked to bring its readers something different, something that touches on the human condition through powerful words and captivating images.

Perhaps you'll find something familiar among these pages, a shared of trauma or maybe just the comfort of common experience.

Or maybe you'll find 206 opportunities for re-growth.
